At its heart, eLearning is essentially a way for workers and students to practice certain skills without the negative consequences associated with failing at work-related tasks. Their conscious and unconscious minds are being trained to learn certain information, recognize important situations and respond appropriately. Consequently, companies should use software that is effective at all three tasks.

The first component of using eLearning software is skills simulation. This simply introduces the rote tasks or steps that employees will eventually need to perform and allows them to practice over and over again. Skills simulation lays the groundwork for the next step.

Strategy simulation asks staff members or pupils to put together multiple skills that were already learned, and use them in concert to solve problems and resolve situations. Strategizing is an important step toward learning how to apply  previous knowledge to abstract scenarios.

Finally, eLearning users are forced to undergo role playing simulations. This puts them into fully realized situations that are likely to occur when they're on the job or out of school. They are then forced to synthesize the skills they've learned and the situations to which they've been introduced to prove that they're able to work in an environment with real consequences.
